Best Times.

Finally went for a show at The Picture House at the recently reopened The Cathay - the award winning Three Times. 3x4_1 No (good) comments for the (nothing) special Picture House, and the movie was a little slow-paced and not extremely captivating at first. It is the kind of movie that wants you to play with your imagination, in a subtle way. Oh yes, the cinematography is really nice too…my frens all voted for the 2nd segment set in 1911 DaDaoCheng for the beautifully composed olden days exquisite nostalgia. Myself, I guess i love the first part, 1966 retro-ish Kaohsiung for the rich colours and pop art prints amongst dreamy settings. The 3rd segment is set in present day Taipei, its youth culture & urban cityscape well depicted. The images are deeply moving. Its 3 different unfinished love story set in 3 eras, open ended, non connected.. 3x1_1
At first it seems puzzling but i guess im a slow in my mind & heart person, i found myself still thinking about the ‘feel’ and the message of the movie 2 days later. Especially strike a chord with me upon reading the director - Hou Hsiao Hsien’s commentary on his movie:

“Our lives are full of fragmentary memories. We can’t give them names, we can’t classify them and they have no great significance. But they lodge in the mind, somehow unshakeable… i think of them as the best of times… ‘The best’ not because we can’t forget them, not because they are things that have now been lost. The reason that they’re the best is that they exist only in our memories.”

[ Indeed, there are certain kind of memories that are especially beautiful and memorable, for the very fact that it is ours individually where no one else in the world can exactly share. Treasure these best times. :) ]
